Frank Tweed was born in Kentford in 1893 (Mildenhall Q2-1893 4A:301) and baptised at St Mary's Kentford on 29th June 1893, the son of James and Rosina
TWEED (née OSBORN).
1901 census...Aged 7, he was at Bury Road, Kentford with his father James TWEED [55] horse keeper on farm, born in Ashley; his mother Rosina [48) born in Gazeley; brothers Frederick [15] agricultural labourer, Hanton [12], Walter B [10], niece Emma Rosa OSBORNE [7]; and sisters Ellen R.[4] and Florence [2] and a visitor, John Tweed [57]. All the children were born in Kentford. 1911 census...Aged 17, he was a shepherd, still in Kentford with his parents, brothers Alfred Charles [37] and Walter Ben, and sisters Emma Rose (now recorded as daughter of James and Rosina), Ellen Rosetta and Florence. One of the 12 children born in the marriage had died. |

Enlisted in Newmarket. Initially in the Suffolk Regiment (as per the memorial plaque, he was transferred to the 24th (County of London) Battalion (The Queen's),London Regiment. They were at High Wood ( half way between Martinpuich and Longueval)on 11th September 1916. With just 14 killed it appears that no major attack took place this day. High Wood was eventually taken on the 15th by the 2nd (London) Division. Frank was initially buried in High Wood, but after the war, in 1920, he was re-interred in Caterpillar Valley Cemetery. This, despite the proximity of London Cemetery, was probably due to London being declared full and closed by then. Men were very often re-interred in cemeteries far removed from their original resting place, despite there being cemeteries closer. |
